PAUL MEYER
Paul Meyer (b. 1974, Houston, Texas) is a painter and sculptor.
The son of a homebuilder, Meyer grew up around construction and early on developed a fascination and respect for its materials, inputs and outcomes. Finding inherent beauty in the rawness of the everyday components, Meyer launched his studio practice with unique incorporations of cement, mortar, wood, and other mixed-media yet uncommon in fine art paintings.
His process involves intentional physicality as well as dependency on the chemical activity of the inanimate materials at his disposal: in the studio, paintings are taking form all around him, with canvases spread out to receive drippage or catch spills from other works in progress; layers of medium form, and he wets them only to shave them down again, creating topographies and material stories on the canvas. He ultimately dictates the final foregrounded composition, focusing on subjects or environments that reflect humility toward the beautifully stark landscapes of the natural world, deference to the hardworking nature of the human experience, and other abstractions or figures in characteristically textured presentations. His work is recognized in not only its subjects, but also its identifiable ethereality, at once familiar and distant, hopeful yet forlorn.
Paul’s studio is located in Austin, Texas. His art works have been exhibited across the United States and Europe, and are installed in public sites, commercial spaces, and private collections alike, including large- and small-scale custom commissions. His art has been featured in The New York Times, Architectural Digest, ELLE Decor, Southern Living, and more.
